Bringing Automation to Immersive Escape Rooms
What do escape rooms and industrial automation have in common? More than you might think.
Recently, Automation.com published a case study highlighting Schulman Engineering’s role in helping an escape room operator upgrade and expand their interactive experience. I wanted to share our perspective on the project, what worked, what we learned, and how automation can unlock new possibilities outside the factory floor.
The Challenge
The client already had a PLC controlled room, but they lacked internal support to maintain or expand it. They wanted something reliable, flexible, and scalable that could grow with their vision for bigger and more immersive experiences.
When we first reviewed the system, we found code that leaned heavily on latching bits. While it worked in some cases, it made the sequence logic difficult to manage and left plenty of room for errors.
Our Approach
We stepped in with a few key goals:
Audit and refactor the code. We replaced fragile latch logic with drum sequencer instructions. This created a clear and maintainable flow of events that scaled easily as the game complexity grew.
Integrate robust hardware. We built the system around the Productivity1000 PLC, chosen for its compact size, affordability, and versatility. With more than 200 unique I/O points to handle, the PLC offered the mix of digital, analog, and serial connections we needed.
Enhance the experience. Beyond lights and locks, immersive gameplay depends on audio. We designed a custom sound box with multiple outputs, storing WAV files on an SD card and triggering them through RS-232 from the PLC.
Support the client. We did not just deliver a black box system. We made sure the client could operate, troubleshoot, and expand on their own with both touchscreen HMI and remote access options.
The Results
The new system gave the client exactly what they needed:
A reliable control system that can handle unpredictable gameplay without constant resets.
Scalability for future rooms, puzzles, and effects without a total rework.
Operational independence with the ability to bypass, troubleshoot, and expand as needed.
This project demonstrates how industrial automation can extend far beyond traditional applications. The same tools used in manufacturing can bring immersion and interactivity to entertainment and themed environments.
Lessons Learned
A few takeaways from this project:
Code design matters. Clean and maintainable logic makes systems easier to grow and support.
Automation is flexible. PLCs are not just for plants, they can power entertainment, museums, exhibits, and interactive art.
Empowering clients builds trust. Supporting operators with the knowledge and tools to maintain their systems pays off long term.
